How to Set Up SMS Verification in Freetrade Web

Updated this week

We’ve introduced a new login method on Freetrade Web using SMS-based multi-factor authentication (MFA). This provides a secure and convenient alternative to using an authenticator app.

Follow the steps below to set up and log in using SMS:

✅ Who Can Use This?

  • All Freetrade customers with Web access can now opt to use SMS as their second authentication method during login.

You’ll need to have a UK mobile number to link it with your Freetrade account.

📱 How to Set Up SMS MFA - New Users

Step 1: Visit the Freetrade Web login page after you’ve verified your email address

Go to web.freetrade.io/login on a supported browser.

Step 2: Enter your email

Use the same email address you use with the Freetrade app.

Step 3: Enter your password

  • If you’ve already set a password and verified your email for the Web, you’ll be prompted to enter it.

Step 4: Choose your MFA method

After setting your password, you’ll be asked to select your preferred MFA option:

  • Choose “SMS”.

Step 5: Enter your mobile number

  • You’ll be asked to enter and verify your UK mobile number.

Step 6: Receive and enter the SMS code

  • You’ll receive a 6-digit code via SMS.

  • Enter this code on the screen to complete your login.

🔁 If the code doesn’t arrive, you can request a new one after a short wait. Be sure to check your signal and reception.

🧠 Good to Know

  • You’ll only need to go through this setup once. After that, you’ll be able to select SMS based or the authenticator app authentication to log in.

  • If you have only set up SMS based login initially and later prefer to switch to an authenticator app, you can do so by navigating to Profile > Security tab on the Web platform.

  • If your phone number changes, you can update it by contacting us.

❓FAQs

Q: What happens if I enter the wrong code too many times?

You’ll be temporarily locked out from requesting new codes for a short period. Try again later or contact support if you're unable to access your account.

Q: Can I still use existing login methods on the mobile app?

Yes! Your mobile app login stays the same. This only affects Web access.

Q: Is SMS less secure than an app?

While authenticator apps offer a higher level of security, SMS still adds an important second layer of protection beyond your password. We recommend using the method that suits your needs best.
