What are the first steps to take when somebody passes away?
Updated this week

We understand that losing somebody can be a difficult process. We’re here to help make it as smooth as possible.

The GOV.UK website has a helpful step by step guide, which breaks down the process of what you’ll need to do when somebody passes away in the UK.

You’ll first need to register the death. This can be done at any registry office, and must be completed within 5 days of the date of death.

After registering the death, an official Death Certificate will be provided. The estate's Executor or Administrator will need this to apply for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, which may be required for several organisations to discuss or settle the estate. In some cases, a Coroner’s Certificate (also known as an Interim Death Certificate) may be provided instead.
